Chapter 26

After ditching the SUV, Drenna and Mei quickly hailed a cab, which they took to the city center. To err on the side of caution, Drenna asked the driver to drop them off four blocks from the NH Amsterdam Barbizon Palace. The two traversed the remaining distance on foot.

Drenna didn’t think the Chinese had been able to track their movements. She hadn’t seen any suspicious vehicles behind their taxi, nor had anyone followed them once they got out. Still, she knew they couldn’t linger in the hotel for very long. She had taken a number of steps to make sure no one knew where she was staying, but those methods weren’t foolproof.

When they entered the room, Mei plunked down in the recliner.

“Don’t get too comfortable.” Drenna closed the door behind them. “I need to make a call, then we’re getting out of here.”

“Don’t you need to pack your things?”

“I’m always packed.”

Mei set her backpack on the floor then got up and walked over to the window. She grabbed the wand that controlled the blinds. “Did you say you have a view of the lobby?”

“Don’t open that,” Drenna said.

Mei lifted her hands in the air submissively. “Sorry. I was just going to check to see if anyone came in behind us.”

“I don’t think we were followed, but it’s possible they know where I’m staying. I’ll check things out before we leave.” Drenna tossed her key card and pistol onto the bed. “As I said, I need to make a call, but it won’t take long.”

Mei nodded then sank into the recliner again.

Drenna entered the bathroom and closed the door behind her. She needed to ask Lucca if he knew of someone who could help them with the encrypted files. If he did, then that would dictate their travel plans. If he didn’t, then she would have to explore other options. She had her own IT contacts, but most of them operated in the US.

Drenna pulled out her phone. After unlocking the screen, she noticed the GPS tracking app she and Lucca had used while following the Chinese couple in Manchester. She wondered if he was still in the UK. He had said he was going home, but he had also said he needed to tie up a loose end before flying out. She wouldn’t be surprised if the so-called loose end was a woman.

Despite some misgivings about invading the Italian’s privacy, Drenna opened the app. A notification at the top indicated the tracker was still active. She lifted a brow. Apparently, he hadn’t revoked her privileges. Maybe he really was with some woman in Manchester. That would explain his forgetfulness.

Her curiosity piqued, she opened the map. A green dot pulsated over Florence, Italy. Her brow furrowed in confusion. Lucca had told her was going home, but home was a luxury apartment on the outskirts of Rome. So why is he in Florence? She used her fingers to zoom in on the location. The dot hovered over a house in an upscale neighborhood.
